Care instructions
Whilst your furniture has been treated to discourage the formation of rust, there are a number of methods you might consider in order to protect it further and to keep your steel furniture looking its best: Put It Away The easiest way to keep your furniture clean and avoid corrosion caused by rain and snow is simply to keep it dry. Whilst metal furniture is more resilient to wear and tear than most wooden equivalents, it's still liable to suffer damage over time - particularly the outer powder coating which will begin to break down when subjected to the ravages of the weather. A small bit of water isn't going to cause a problem straight away, but if left to linger for extended periods, it could facilitate rust. So if you’d like to keep your furniture happy for longer, when you aren’t using it, fold it up and pop it away somewhere dry, whether that's under the eaves or in the garden shed. Cover It Up Placing a furniture cover over your metal furniture will give a snug, secure and waterproof covering that will also protect it from dirt, dust or bird foul (which is a particular bane, due to its highly acidic content). Deal with Scratches Your furniture's powder coated finish should be strong enough to keep rust at bay, but over time this coating might get chipped or scratched, losing its effectiveness as a rust barrier. Behind this is a rust-resistant coating on the metal, but a scratch down to bare metal will expose an area that will quickly suffer corrosion if not protected. To preserve your furniture’s lifespan, touch up any chips as soon as you spot them, and take extra care not to scratch furniture when moving and storing it. Give it a Coating The hinges and joints of metal frames lose their protective coat very quickly from repeated moving and folding. So, just like any moving parts, they benefit from a regular oil or grease, being careful to avoid the areas of the frame that you actually sit or rest on. For a really top quality life extending treatment give your furniture a good clean and dry, and then coat the whole piece with a tin of clear lacquer. It’s Too Late – There’s Already Rust If you've spotted some rust, all is not lost! Use a rust primer on the affected area - to preventing it from spreading - then once the area has dried, simply paint over it.
