This classic late 18th-century country house was discovered in 1952 in a sadly derelict state by Lord and Lady Iliffe. They devoted the next 25 years to repairing Basildon Park, buying appropriate Italian Old Master paintings and antique furniture. They also transformed it into a comfortable modern home, to which they could welcome their many friends. With amazing generosity, in 1978 they decided to give Basildon to the National Trust so that it could be enjoyed by everyone.
