How to choose a wool throw for your home

Updated 2nd Oct 2026
A throw is a simple way to add colour and comfort to a room. Keep one within reach of your favourite armchair, drape it over the sofa or fold it across the end of a bed, ready for cooler evenings.
But which should you choose? From materials and measurements to colours and patterns, here’s what to consider when finding a throw for your home.
Start with how you’ll use the throw or blanket

Think about where your throw will spend most of its time. Something to wrap around your shoulders needs to feel comfortable against your skin. A throw for the end of a bed needs enough width to create the look you want. For an armchair, a smaller throw can be easier to arrange without fabric gathering on the floor.
Measure the space before you buy and compare it with the dimensions on the product page. On a bed, decide whether you want the throw to sit neatly on top or hang over the sides. On a sofa, consider whether you’ll use it yourself or share it.
Don’t choose by appearance alone. A throw should earn its place through everyday use
Check the material
Our throws and blankets collection includes pure wool and recycled options. Check the composition of each product, as recycled throws aren’t all made from the same fibres.
If you enjoy the feel of a traditional wool blanket, start by exploring the wool designs. If you’re buying for someone else, consider their preferences too. Some people love a textured finish; others prefer a smoother feel.
For an option made using leftover yarn, our National Trust Recycled Rug uses wool yarn end-cuts that would otherwise go to waste. It’s made in the UK by Tweedmill.
Choose a colour that works with your room

Look at the colours already around you: the sofa, curtains, walls and rug. Your throw can pick up one of those shades or introduce a different colour.
Green can work well alongside wood and cream furnishings. Blue offers another option for a room with pale walls, while mustard or burnt orange can add warmth to a neutral sofa.
You don’t need to match everything exactly. Choosing a shade that appears in a cushion, picture or lampshade can help the room feel connected without making it too uniform.
If you’re unsure, compare a few colours in the room where you’ll use the throw before deciding.
Add pattern without overwhelming the space
A woven pattern can give a plain sofa or bed more interest. Herringbone and fishbone designs are worth considering if you want pattern without a large print.
Where you already have patterned cushions or curtains, choose a throw with a quieter design and a colour that brings those pieces together. In a mostly plain room, you have more room to experiment.
A reversible throw gives you another way to change the look. Our burnt orange and grey or olive and grey reversible throws let you display either colour, depending on your room or the season.
Keep styling simple

Fold a throw over the arm of a sofa so it’s easy to reach, or lay it loosely across one corner. On a bed, fold it lengthways across the foot, leaving some of the bedding visible.
Try layering different textures rather than adding too many colours or patterns. Wool works particularly well alongside plain cushions and natural fabrics, adding warmth and texture without making the room feel too busy.
Avoid arranging it so carefully that nobody wants to use it. The best place for a throw is somewhere it looks good but can still be picked up whenever you need an extra layer.
Read the care instructions
Before buying, check how the throw should be cleaned. Follow the instructions on its care label rather than assuming all wool or recycled throws can be washed in the same way.
Care matters especially if the throw will be used every day, shared with pets or given as a gift.
Find your favourite
Whether you prefer a soft green, a rich autumn shade or a classic woven pattern, choose a throw that suits both your room and the way you live.
