Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top Guidebook

Hill Top Guidebook

Learn more about Hill Top with this informative guidebook.

Hill Top is a shrine to Beatrix Potter, each room imbued with her spirit. The house she bought with the royalties from her first and most famous book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit, became her cabinet of curiosities, a giant dolls’ house where she would arrange and re-arrange her things as she liked. Every painting, piece of furniture and antique had symbolic or emotional meaning to her.

Featuring new photography, illustrations from the ‘little books’ and photographs of Beatrix and her family, this new guidebook traces the fascinating story of this extraordinary woman. Peppered with quotes from Beatrix, it reveals her lonely London childhood, how she became a successful author and illustrator, and how she fell in love with the Lakes and acquired Hill Top.

Readers will discover her lovely farmhouse and cottage garden and see how her surroundings inspired many scenes in her little books, and how, in later life, she reinvented herself as a farmer, landowner, conservationist and National Trust supporter.

Today, it is thanks to her that the Lake District remains one of the most spectacular corners of England.

5 stars Far exceeded my expectations! Written by

I fell in love with the photos in the guide at first glance. When I had opportunity to read it through, I completely had to have one for each of my five older children to one day show to our grandchildren while reading them her books. You captured Beatrix's life so simply and beautifully, sharing her passionate love of nature, art, and her family life. But also, you sensitively described the times she lived and the challenges she faced as a woman. Love it!

5 stars An exceptional Guidebook Written by

I am looking forward to touring the Lake Country in June 2017. This Guidebook is so well done and my visit to Hill Top will be one of the highlights of the trip. I have a collection of books about Beatrix Potter's life and of course a complete set of her Peter Rabbit books that I purchased over 45 years ago to read to my daughters. I cannot wait to see Hill Top in person. I have been to England before and recognize that The National Trust is outstanding in everything they work with.

5 stars Really Pleased ... Written by

I wanted this guidebook for pictures of the inside of Beatrix Potter's house. I wasn't disappointed! I am considering doing a dolls house using the pictures of the rooms.

5 stars It is many years since I visited Hill Top and have a very old copy of the guidebook to the house. Written by

This new guidebook is full of information about both Beatrix Potter and the house. The pictures are a delight. It is a collector's treasure.
