Overview

Philip Webb designed Standen, one of the finest Arts and Crafts houses, for London solicitor James Beale and his wife Margaret in the 1890s. With fine Sussex countryside views, the restored garden was largely designed by Webb and G. B. Simpson, with Margaret Beale’s unconventional planting featuring rare plants and strong colours.

Drawing on important new research, this guide tells the story of Standen, and the Beales, with highlights from its remarkable collection. Discover how Margaret Beale created her vision of a comfortable, artistic family home influenced by both the Aesthetic and Arts and Crafts Movements. Inviting rooms, decorated by Morris & Co., house the Beales’ possessions, which have been further enriched by Arthur and Helen Grogan and the National Trust.
