The Wonder of the North

The Wonder of the North

The Wonder of the North

Reviews (1)

An interesting and informative book charting the rise and fall of England’s largest Cistercian monastery.

Called ‘The Wonder of the North’ in 1729, the Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal World Heritage Site is one of world’s most beautiful and magnificent designed landscapes.

This volume, based on 25 years’ research, tells its full story, from the prehistoric through medieval times to the Victorian era for the first time. It charts the rise and fall of England’s largest Cistercian monastery and reveals the hitherto lost history and scale of the Aislabie family’s Studley Royal designed landscape, and its place at the forefront of every emergent garden fashion of the eighteenth century.

5 stars More on the Fountains Abbey, Studley Royal Story Written by

I have been interested in the history of Fountains Abbey since I first visited the ruins almost 60 years ago and have purchased and collected most of the Guide books since, I knew nothing of this book until I read the novel "Murder at Fountains Abbey" a fictional story and I was reading the source for the novel and this book was mentioned. Yes it is expensive, however it is most interesting and I consider the story has not finished yet. This is about the Abbey ruins and the Studley Royal estate, halfway thoroughly recommend to anyone interested with a thirst to know more about this site.
