Overview

Mawr was the birthplace of Bishop William Morgan, the first translator of the Bible into Welsh.

Thanks to his contribution, Welsh was preserved as a language of scholarship while boosting literacy amongst ordinary Welsh people, whose only text would have been their Bible.

Set in the heart of the beautiful Conwy Valley,  Mawr is singularly important as the bishop's birthplace, but it is also remarkable for the ordinariness that it typifies, giving the visitor a real feeling for what life would have been like for Welsh farmers hundreds of years ago.
