‘We reached Stourhead at 3 o’clock. By that time the sun had penetrated the mist, and was gauzy and humid… Never do I remember such Claude-like, idyllic beauty here. See Stourhead and die.’ – James Lees-Milne

First opened in the 1740s, Stourhead has captivated visitors for centuries – on opening, one magazine even described it as a ‘living work of art’. This guidebook shows why, exploring the Palladian mansion, housing a picture collection so large it required a new room to be built, to its world-famous landscape garden, to the 2,000 acres of woodland, chalk downs and parkland.

But Stourhead is also a home; created by the Hoare family, they have lived here since it was opened and their story of triumphs and tragedies adds a new dimension to this extensive estate.

2 stars not according to expectations Written by
Although sent rather quickly, the packaging was not suited. The guidebook arrived folded as a flexible envelop was used in stead of a hard back. I can imagine the price of shipping and packaging being the same. Maybe something can be done about this

Bought this online as I couldn't get one from the property on the day we visited. The guidebook is the now familiar colourful read that the NT publish. It arrived in super fast time, well done excellent service. Not the NT's fault but it was somewhat spoilt by the postman deciding to fold it in half to get it through the letterbox.
