Packed with fascinating facts and fun things to do, this book will tell you all you need to know about life at Quarry Bank. Join our guides, Craig, Sal and Asif, brilliantly illustrated by Tom Percival, and discover what life was like for children in a cotton mill. Find out why mill workers used to lip-read, what the smelliest jobs were, and which machines could be dangerous. Along the way learn to weave, make your own mill porridge and take the apprentice test.

New photography, fun illustrations and lively text all works together to answer questions such as, who lived at Quarry Bank, who were the apprentices and what is a spinning mule?

About the author: Jane Bingham grew up in London and now lives in Oxford. She has always loved writing about the past and she completed her first historical novel when she was ten years old. It was utterly dreadful, but fortunately she improved and she is now the author of over a hundred history books for children. Two of her favourite titles are The Great Castle Search (for Usborne) and The Victorians (for Ladybird). When she’s not writing, Jane loves exploring castles, mansions and caves – or anywhere old and mysterious!

About the illustrator: Tom Percival grew up in a remote part of South Shropshire in a small caravan without electricity, mains water or any sensible form of heating. Tom has written and illustrated several picture books as well as the series Little Legends. He also does lots of other bits and pieces, like animation and music production, but let’s not get into all that right now.
