Summer 2022 edition highlights

We hope the summer issue of National Trust Magazine will fill you with the joys of summer as our gardens start to bloom. Celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and have a go at making your own celebration cake, learn how technology is shining a light on Trust places or discover the history witnessed by some of the most notable trees in our care.

Our cover feature takes you on a tour of 20 Forthlin Road with Mike McCartney who grew up here with his brother Paul. Mike shares his memories and photos in an intimate look at the early days of the Beatles. As part of the celebrations for Sir Paul McCartney’s 80th birthday this year and the 60th anniversary of the release of the single ‘Love Me Do’, we're exploring the next phase of conservation for this very special house. Together with the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts we'll be offering new musicians the chance to bring music back to 20 Forthlin Road.

Elsewhere, in the year of Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, we reflect on the many Trust places which have hosted royalty over the centuries, and highlight some of the 70 tree-planting projects being planned this year to commemorate the occasion.

We also take a trip Glendurgan in Cornwall to meet Andrew Hesser, one of the volunteer gardeners. Andrew is registered blind and shares how his work has given him and the garden team a fresh perspective on the sounds and scents of this magical garden.

Finally, whether you’re joining in the Jubilee celebrations or hosting a summer garden party, we share tips on how you can make an indulgent afternoon tea and share some of the history behind this quintessentially British tradition.
