Reviews (1)

In Dark Places by Wyl Menmuir is the first collaborative publishing venture of its kind between university students and a trade publisher. It is the launch title for a series of pocket-size fiction, inspired by the history and environment of National Trust places.

‘There were once people who walked lightly. Who heard, in the space between their footsteps, reverberations and echoes of the fissures and caverns that lay below. Otherworlds and underworlds. Places that spoke to them.’

In this darkly atmospheric story, a young couple on their honeymoon set out to explore Cheddar Gorge, only to find themselves increasingly distanced from one another as the presence of the claustrophobic caves closes in around them…

5 stars BEAUTIFUL Written by

What a superb little book - it's only small, so can be read in one sitting, but my gosh it's compelling. It has a wonderfully dreamlike quality to it, where stories overlap and drift into one another, and it really drew me in. The illustrations are perfect as well and made the whole experience ten times more moving than I was expecting. I'll keep an eye out for more Wyl Menmuir books and hope to see more of Emma Butcher's stunning artwork in the future.
