5 stars Very informative, well written and affordable book Written by

This book has been ideal for my requirements. I like architecture but knew little about it. I think it is a really well written and well illustrated book which is equally good for reading like a text book or as a reference book. The book has are no photographs. Instead, it has line drawings which are clear and attractive, and give a great consistency to the book. It’s a practical introduction to understanding the historical and architectural clues of architecture. It has 250 pages, but measures only about 5.5ins by 6.5ins, so it easily fits in a jacket pocket. It has front and back cover tabs which are great for holding the current reading page. The book covers the key characteristics of buildings from ancient Greek architecture to the present, and gives examples from around the world. It explains the historical development of building styles (and their many revivals) as well as mentioning the structural considerations. The book has a brief general introduction, then a discussion of building types, followed by a “grammar of style” and a description of materials. Then the rest of the book covers different architectural features, such as roofs, domes, towers, doors and windows. It also has a very useful glossary and index. This very affordable book has increased my knowledge of architecture considerably (from virtually zero base) and has increased my enjoyment of visiting NT properties a great deal.
