5 stars A good buy Written by

Lovely books, well packed and safely delivered in good condition (no problem with that now). I shall enjoy reading and dipping into them for a long time to come.

4 stars At last you can see the National Trust's paintings Written by

It is very exciting to see the whole of the National Trust’s collection of paintings finally published together. Not many other historic houses have done this. I have the whole set as I have been a member of the National Trust for over 25 years and travel regularly throughout the UK. I enjoy looking at the pictures in the properties but as there are no labels beside the pictures - understandably because of the historic wall coverings -it is often difficult to know who painted what. There are lists that the stewards have in the rooms when you are there but it is great to flick through in advance and afterwards. I have been buying a few of the PCF volumes over the last ten years and am happy with the decent-sized colour thumbnails and love the full page illustrations every 20 pages or so. The National Trust volumes have the whole painting illustrated which I prefer to the details in previous catalogues. There have been some great surprises, partly because you can see the images better than in real life in some cases! There are a lot less portraits of ancestors than I expected. There are more modern works of art than I had anticipated which is very refreshing to see. I also thoroughly enjoyed all the introductions to the different properties and the excellent informative essay to the history of the Trust. It is a shame it had to be repeated six times but I can see that was for those buying individual volumes. As usual I chuckled over the Fred Hohler’s forewords – what an amazing achievement of his to uncover our nation’s oil paintings in these catalogues. I also prefer the smooth hardcovers to the paper.
